The Girondist table tennis players hoped to create the exploit but Borussia Düsseldorf was too strong.
After a good evening first slice thanks to the victory of Song LIU on Japanese Jun MIZUTANI everything announced under the best auspices.
The second party was going to be the bend of the match, the cestadais Finn TUGWELL (world N°116) made better than defend itself against N°49 Christian Süß and would have deserved to end in four sleeves. Regrettably the success avoided it as during the first leg in front of Petr KORBEL and it is the German who was imperative in the fifth decisive sleeve.
Everything was still possible, but the task looked very difficle for the captain of the S.A.G.Cestas Eric VARIN opposite to world N°20 Petr KORBEL. In spite of a good performance the logical result fell 3 - 1 for the visitor.

1998 - 1999 : The S.A.G.CESTAS qualified directly for the 3rd round of the E.T.T.U. Nancy - Evans European Cup met in 1/8 of finale the team of HAPOËL LOD (Israel) at the BOUZET Sport Hall. A clean victory for the cestadais Armand PHUNG, Matthew SYED and Carl PREAN by 4 to 0. It was the 22nd meeting of European Cup played by cestadais' team. The 1/4 of finale took place in Germany the 23rd of January 1999 and the S.A.G.CESTAS played versus BAD HONNEF head of set N°1 - DING SONG (Chinese) N°1 of the Bundesliga (only 1 defeat in championship), Karoly NEMETH (N°1 Hungarian), Torben WOSIK N°2 in Germany and the young Zoltan FEJER-KONNERTH N°10 German won the match by 4 to 0. Result very severe for cestadais beaten by three times to advantages.

Cestas beat the sideburns team of STEINHAGEN by 4 to 2 and this in spite of the presence of the Swedish KARLSSON world rancked number 7. Cestas reaches the 1/4 of final of the E.T.T.U. Cup.
